This Privacy Policy describes how The Biltong Butcher ('we', 'us', 'our') collects, uses, holds, and discloses personal information from users ('you', 'User') of our website and the products and services we offer through it.


We collect personal information from you in a variety of ways, including when you visit our site, create an account, subscribe to our mailing list or the Forever Snack Pack, place an order, or otherwise interact with features we make available. You may be asked for information such as your name, email address, delivery address, and phone number. You may browse our site without providing any personal information, but you will need to provide certain information to place an order or subscribe.


We collect personal information from you only where you voluntarily provide it. You may decline to provide certain information, but this may prevent you from completing a purchase or accessing certain features of the site.

CLIENT TO CONFIRM: this assumes The Biltong Butcher operates as a trading name of Kalahari Khabu Limited rather than under its own separate company registration. If The Biltong Butcher has, or will have, its own NZBN and company number, provide those details and this section will be updated to describe the two as related companies under common ownership instead of a single entity trading under two names. Either way, the framing in section 06 below holds — your information stays within the same family-owned business.

What information we collect


INFORMATION YOU GIVE US

  • Name, email address, phone number, delivery address, and billing address when you create an account, place an order, or subscribe to the Forever Snack Pack.

  • Payment information when you make a purchase. Payment is processed securely by Shopify Payments. We do not store full payment card details ourselves.

  • Information you provide when contacting us, including emails, messages, and any details you share when requesting support, a return, or a refund.

  • Flavour preferences, subscription frequency, and delivery preferences if you join the Forever Snack Pack subscription.


INFORMATION WE COLLECT AUTOMATICALLY

  • Usage data, including pages visited, time spent on the site, and how you arrived at our site, collected through cookies and similar technologies.

  • Device and browser information, including IP address, browser type, and operating system.


INFORMATION FROM THIRD PARTIES

We may receive information about you from third-party services you interact with through our site, such as social media platforms or payment providers. Each of these third parties has its own privacy policy describing how they handle your information.

Our site uses cookies and similar technologies to ensure you get the best experience, to remember items in your cart, to keep you logged into your account, and to understand how our site is used.

  • Essential cookies: required for the site to function, including maintaining your cart, your account login, and your subscription management through Recharge.

  • Analytics cookies: help us understand how visitors use our site so we can improve it, including Shopify's built-in analytics and Google Analytics.

  • Email and marketing cookies: used by Klaviyo, our email platform, to understand how you interact with our emails and our site so we can send more relevant content.

  • Advertising cookies: used by Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Google to show you relevant ads and measure their performance. See section 06 for more detail on how this works.


You can control or disable cookies through your browser settings. If you disable cookies, some parts of our site may not work properly, including the ability to add items to your cart or complete a purchase.

How we use your information


We use the information we collect to:


  • Process and fulfil your orders, including subscription deliveries through the Forever Snack Pack.

  • Communicate with you about your order, account, or subscription, including dispatch notifications and tracking information.

  • Provide customer service and respond to your enquiries, returns, and refund requests.

  • Send you marketing communications via Klaviyo, our email platform, including flavour drops, protein tips, and Forever Snack Pack offers, where you have opted in to receive these. Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link in line with the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007, and you can unsubscribe at any time using that link or by contacting us directly.

  • Improve our site, products, and services, including through analytics on how the site is used.

  • Detect and prevent fraud, and keep our site and services secure.

  • Comply with our legal obligations, including tax and consumer protection law.

Disclosure of your information


We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with unrelated third parties for their own purposes. The only sharing of your information that takes place is described below, and falls into three categories: the service providers who help us run our store, our advertising partners, and our sister business, Kalahari Khabu.


SERVICE PROVIDERS

We use trusted service providers to operate The Biltong Butcher. These providers process your information on our behalf, under their own security and privacy standards, and do not use it for their own independent purposes:


  • Shopify, our ecommerce platform, which hosts our store, processes orders, and provides built-in analytics.

  • Shopify Payments, for processing payments securely. We do not see or store your full card details.

  • Recharge, for managing Forever Snack Pack subscriptions, including delivery frequency, flavour preferences, and billing.

  • Klaviyo, our email platform, for sending order confirmations, shipping updates, and marketing communications.

  • Additional Shopify apps that support specific store features. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: list any apps that handle personal information, e.g. reviews, loyalty, or gift card apps, if applicable].

  • Couriers and delivery partners, to fulfil and deliver your order.


ADVERTISING — GOOGLE AND META

We use Google and Meta (Facebook and Instagram) to advertise The Biltong Butcher. This includes standard tools such as the Meta Pixel and Google's advertising tags, which help us understand how people interact with our ads and our site.


It also includes Meta Custom Audiences and Google Customer Match. This means we may securely upload a hashed (encrypted, non-readable) version of your email address to these platforms, so that we can show relevant ads to existing customers or find new customers with similar interests. Neither platform receives your information in plain text, and neither platform is permitted to use it for purposes other than delivering our advertising.


You can opt out of personalised advertising at any time through your ad settings on Facebook, Instagram, or Google, or by contacting us and asking us to remove your details from our advertising lists.


THE BILTONG BUTCHER AND KALAHARI KHABU

The Biltong Butcher and Kalahari Khabu are part of the same family-owned business. Kalahari Khabu designs and builds the biltong-drying cabinets that we use to make every batch of biltong sold on this site — the same equipment available to home biltong makers across New Zealand. We use this equipment ourselves because we trust it, every single batch.


Biltong was previously sold through the Kalahari Khabu website. The Biltong Butcher now exists as a dedicated home for biltong, built to make ordering, subscribing, and reordering simpler. If you previously purchased biltong through Kalahari Khabu, your contact and order details may be held by The Biltong Butcher so that we can continue serving you without asking you to register again.


Because both businesses are part of the same family-owned company, your information stays within the same hands. It is not transferred to an outside party, sold, or passed to anyone beyond our own business. Moving from Kalahari Khabu to The Biltong Butcher does not change who holds your information, who owns it, or how it is protected under this policy.


LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

We may disclose your information where required to do so by law, in response to a valid request from a regulatory or government authority, or where necessary to protect our rights, property, or safety, or that of our customers or others.

Other websites


Our site may contain links to other websites, including Kalahari Khabu and our social media channels. Where these are sites we operate ourselves (such as Kalahari Khabu), the relevant parts of this policy apply as described in section 06. Where a link takes you to a website operated by someone else, we are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of that website, and we encourage you to review its privacy policy.

How we protect your information


We take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from unauthorised access, loss, misuse, or alteration. This includes using secure, reputable third-party platforms such as Shopify, which maintain their own security standards.


Some of our service providers may store or process data on servers located outside New Zealand. Where this occurs, we take reasonable steps to ensure your information continues to be protected to a standard consistent with the Privacy Act 2020.


No method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure. While we strive to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.


We retain your personal information only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes described in this policy, or as required by law, including tax and accounting obligations.

Your rights and accessing your information


UNDER THE PRIVACY ACT 2020 (NEW ZEALAND)

You have the right to:


  • Ask us to confirm whether we hold personal information about you, and to access that information.

  • Ask us to correct your personal information if it is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, or misleading.

  • Withdraw consent to marketing communications at any time.

  • Ask us to delete your account and associated personal information, subject to our legal obligations to retain certain records.


To exercise any of these rights, contact us at info@biltongbutcher.com. We will respond to your request within the timeframes required by the Privacy Act 2020, generally within 20 working days. We do not charge a fee for reasonable access requests.


If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your personal information, you have the right to make a complaint to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the 'last updated' date at the bottom of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically to stay informed about how we protect your information. Continued use of our site after changes are posted means you accept those changes.
